SPP 360

Author: Richard Rose

Description: The New Russia Barometer (NRB) monitors the response of Russians to the political and economic transformation of their society through nationwide representative sample surveys. The NRB survey was started in January, 1992, the first month of the new Russian Federation. NRB surveys have been conducted regularly since, creating such basic economic, political and social indicators as support for the regime and for undemocratic alternatives, being paid or not being paid by employers, poverty, strategies Russians use to cope with problems inherited from the old regime and support for different types of economic system. This SPP paper reports trend data from ten nationwide Russian surveys from 1992 to 2001. It also compares Russian attitudes with Belarus and Ukraine.
