SPP 452

Author: Jan Delhey

Description: The transnational trust approach offers a new way of answering the question: Why do European citizens support measures of supranational political integration? It is a distinct variant of what is commonly labelled the 'identity approach' to mass support. Empirically the paper shows that trust in Co-Europeans, that is, citizens of other EU countries, tends to be conducive to supportive attitudes towards European unification in a plurality of countries over and above feelings of European identity. Trust matters most in the Western-continental countries and very little, if at all, in the Mediterranean countries. Against the background of recent and coming EU enlargements, one main conclusion is that composition matters: unpopular enlargements can result in dwindling support for the European project.
