Author: Jeffrey W. Hahn

Description: Theories of Soviet political culture addressed the issue of continuities between Soviet man and older authoritarian traditions in Russian society--but without empirical survey data. The extent of change since 1990 has shown discontinuities with Soviet traditions. To what extent is this evidence of democratic cultural norms? This question is answered by drawing on survey data collected in the ancient Russian province of Yaroslavl' in three ways between 1990 and 1996. Russian responses are also compared with data about American public opinion.
