SPP 306

Author: Richard Rose and Christian Haerpfer

Description: The fifth New Democracies Barometer survey was conducted in 1998 in 12 countries: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Serbia and Montenegro, Belarus, Ukraine and, for comparison with an established democracy, Austria. In each country a nationwide representative sample was drawn; a total of 12,643 persons were interviewed. In addition to standard NDB measures of economic and political behaviour and social conditions, the fifth NDB survey includes additional questions on corruption and trust, attitudes to the European Union, and health. This paper analyzes the results comparatively across seven Central and East European countries, in comparison with the former Soviet republics of Belarus and Ukraine, and with Austria. It also adds a section comparing social capital networks to get things done in the Republic of Korea as well as the Czech Republic, Russia and Ukraine. A lengthy appendix gives full results for all questions in all countries and sample details.
