SPP 353

Author: Judith Kullberg

Description: This paper draws from classical and contemporary theories of organizations and institutions to model the nature of politics in the transition and post-transition period. The model conceptualizes politics in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe as a game played within a particular space, composed and bounded by specific institutions, and regulated by largely internalized behavioral norms. Because of the distinct social, economic, and political context in which it is played, the post-totalitarian game differs significantly from the democratic game. The argument is illustrated by a detailed analysis of the fragmented and unsuccessful attempts of Russian liberals to form political parties immediately before and after the break up of the Soviet Union.
