During the last decade, research on the regional aspects of Russia's politics has become one of the most expanding fields in Russian and Western political studies. Radical political and economic reforms in Russia have placed Russia's federalism, regional politics, and local government in the center of academic as well as practical interest. This paper is an attempt to give a general overview of regional political studies in Russia and to put them into theoretical and comparative perspective. Drawing extensively on Russian sources, the major topics to be covered are: 1) Russia's federal structure and center-regional relations; 2) regional political institutions and processes; 3) local government in Russia.
