Author: Richard Rose

Description: Since autumn, 1991 the New Europe Barometer (NEB) has repeatedly conducted representative nationwide sample surveys annually across Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. In each of 14 countries--Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia--one thousand or more respondents have been interviewed face-to-face about economic, political and social behaviour and attitudes. Because the same questions are asked in every country, the results can be compared across a wide swathe of Europe. Because they are repeated from year to year, trends can also be identified and compared across a wide variety of post-Communist and new EU member states. This paper presents a systematic analysis of key political and economic trends from the first NEB survey in 1991 to the latest in the winter of 2004/5. Altogether, it summarizes the results of more than 110,000 interviews.
