The 2011 Russian Duma election was intended to legitimate the hold on government of Vladimir Putin’s and United Russia. The procedures used stimulated unprecedented public protests in Moscow against the unfairness of a nominally competitive election. We use Levada Centre survey data collected from demonstrators as well a national population sample to examine the characteristics of those who did and did not support making protests against the conduct of the election.
