SPP 338

Author: Professor Richard Rose

Description: The New Baltic Barometer (NBB) survey conducted in spring, 2000, concerns the behaviour and attitudes of the six principal nationalities living in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It asks representative samples of each nationality similar sets of questions about their multiple identities, language use, political attitudes, economic behaviour and social structural conditions. A special feature of the fourth NBB survey is a set of questions about language use at work and the usefulness of learning different languages. The paper presents answers for all questions subdivided by nationality. A substantial number of questions maintain trends monitored in three earlier rounds of Baltic surveys in 1993, 1995 and 1996.
