SPP 339

Author: Professor Doh C Shin

Description: The Korea Democracy Barometer was launched in 1988, the first year of the country's move from military dictatorship to a new regime based on democratic elections. Since then eight nationwide sample surveys of the Korean population have been conducted, focusing on the breadth, depth, direction, durability and stability of mass support for and involvement in democratic politics. Many of the questions asked are comparable with measures of democracies in surveys on other continents; some are distinctive in their focus on attitudes toward democracy as an ideal and government as it is. This paper describes the key questions used as indicators of attitudes toward democracy, and gives 12 tables and 3 graphics with answers for the period of the last two presidents.
