SPP 342

Author: Professor Stephen White

Description: Moldova is the least studied country in Europe. It occupies a strategically sensitive position wedged between Ukraine and Romania, and its substantial Russian population in Transdniestria is currently under the protection of troops of the Russian Federation. This paper presents the results of a major survey of public opinion in Moldova, excluding the Transdniestria region, with standard New Europe Barometer questions about political attitudes toward government and democracy; economic attitudes and behaviour; attitudes toward the European Union and more generally toward national security and relations with the Russian Federation or Western countries. Replies are presented separately for Moldovans, Russians and for all respondents.
