SPP 357

Author: Paul Lazarsfeld Society

Description: This paper reports the results of two nationwide sample surveys in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia undertaken in March, 1998, before frictions in the Serbia province of Kosovo was followed by US-led intervention there, and the second in December, 2000, eight weeks after a presidential election in which Voyjislav Kostunica defeated Slobodan Milosevic. Both surveys included questions covering political, social and economic topics, including attitudes toward present and current regimes, and national identity. Given differences between the two constituent parts of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro, the results are reported separately for each. Since Montenegro has a relatively small portion of the country's population, it was oversampled in order to increase the accuracy of the results reported here.
