SPP 230

Author: Richard Rose, CSPP & Christian Haerpfer, Paul Lazarsfeld Society

Description: The third annual NDB survey involved nationally representative sample surveys in ten countries: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Belarus and Ukraine. A total of 11,087 persons were interviewed in the period late November, 1993-April 1994. The questionnaire covered standard NDB questions about the family's economic situation and evaluation of the national economy--past, present and future; evaluations of new democratic institutions and alternatives to democracy; and social and demographic data. A number of new questions were asked in NDB III about trust, freedom, and attitudes toward non-democratic types of governance. This SPP paper reports responses to all questions by country; it also has prose and analytic tables and graphics highlighting findings of special importance. Since many questions were also asked in the first NDB survey in autumn 1991 (SPP 204) and in the second survey (SPP 212) comparisons are possible across time. The New Democracies Barometer is supported by grants from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research and the Austrian National Bank to the Paul Lazarsfeld Society, Vienna.
