Turkey

Many classic themes of European political sociology are important in Turkey: development, democratization, national identity, religion secularization, regionalism, urbanization and class. The CSPP programme was launched with the publication on QUALITY OF LIFE IN TURKEY, co-authored by Richard Rose and Professor Yusuf Ziya Ozcan of the Middle East Technical University. It draws on survey data to provide a detailed analysis of Turkish society in comparison with Bulgaria, Romania and other old and new EU member states in terms of population, individual education, economic resources, social tensions, women's participation in society, and life satisfaction (Overview / Full Report).

The CSPP participated in the design of the 2007 Turkish Election Study, led by Professors Ali Carkoglu and Ersin Kalaycioglu of Sabanci University. This has led to the publication of the following papers:

SPP 459. HICAB, TURBAN, AND DEMOCRACY: RELIGIOUS FREEDOM VERSUS POLITICAL PROTEST. Ersin Kalaycioglu.

SPP 440. TURKISH VOTERS AND LOSERS’ CONSENT. Richard Rose.

SPP 439. IDEOLOGY OR ECONOMIC PRAGMATISM: DETERMINANTS OF PARTY CHOICE IN TURKEY FOR THE JULY 2007 ELECTIONS. Ali Carkoglu.

SPP 436. APPLYING EU STANDARDS TO TURKISH GOVERNANCE: A BOTTOM UP APPROACH. Richard Rose.

SPP 435. PARTY AFFILIATIONS OF TURKISH VOTERS TODAY. Ersin Kalaycioglu.
