The purpose of this paper is to report the results of representative nationwide sample surveys of public opinion in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia & Montenegro undertaken in September-October 2005. Since the governments in all seven countries are in the process of discussing closer relations with the European Union, the questionnaire asks people about possible positive and negative effects of their country having closer ties with the EU. It also asks about the economic circumstances of individuals, their political opinions and attitudes toward different nationalities. Since the same questions are asked in all seven countries, it is easy to make comparisons across the region.
