Description: |
Glasnost encouraged the empirical study of public opinion in the Soviet Union, and VCIOM was founded in December, 1987 to conduct nationwide sample surveys of mass behaviour and attitudes at a time when political leaders realized that they could no longer dictate what the people thought. Since then it has conducted hundreds of surveys about economic behaviour, social conditions and political attitudes. Collectively, these surveys constitute an extraordinary data base about the lives and attitudes of ordinary Russians during a time of great political and economic turmoil and transformation. This SPP paper contains a systematic catalogue of the social science surveys undertaken by VCIOM since 1989, giving the scope and subjects covered in each survey. It also includes an alphabetical index of all topics covered by the surveys.
