Description: | In this paper I explore the referents of the spatial left-right metaphors both in descriptive as well as explanatory terms for Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. I argue that Eastern Europe is by no means homogeneous, but exhibits different levels and types of ideological articulation. Social structure and social mobility affect post-socialist constructions of politics everywhere, but historical experiences and institutional practices --such as previous experiences with democracy, the recent pathways to democracy, and the new political institutions-- leave their imprint on the articulation of political beliefs as well. |
