In less than two decades Russians have come to support their regime, but the world economic crisis that erupted in 2008 questions whether this support can continue. We draw on a New Russia Barometer survey in June, 2009, to see how much difference the economic crisis has made for political support. The first section sets out a model with hypotheses about the potential influence on political attitudes of socialization and political performance as well as economic conditions. Statistical analysis identifies macro-economic evaluations of the national economy as much more important than micro-economic household conditions. However, the negative impact of the economic crisis is limited rather than threatening and this is confirmed by comparing determinants of regime support in 2009 with pre-crisis NRB surveys.
