There have been significant variations in health between individuals, between countries and before, during and after the transformation of what were once Communist bloc countries. This article uses the 13-country New Europe Barometer survey data to test the influence on individual health of stresses and opportunities of transformation, individual resources and national context. It finds that individual resources are of primary importance and that opportunities of transformation by now have a greater impact on health than stresses for people living in new EU member states but not in post-Soviet societies.
