A high level of GDP per capita makes it possible to pay higher wages, but whether this happens depends on how the output of an economy is allocated. The two tend to correlate but there is not an exact fit between the two. By a substantial margin, the highest level of wages is in the Far East, and then in the Northern region. Although GDP per capita is highest in West Siberia, the region ranks fourth in wage levels. The Central region ranks just above average in GDP per capita, but just below average in wage levels. The regions at the bottom in wages, such as the North Caucasus, the Central Black Earth region and Volgo-Vyatka, are also the regions at the bottom in GDP per capita.
