Fear of Losing Job is High
When economic conditons get difficult in a region, people living there begin to fear unemployment. This makes expectations of unemployment a leading indicator of economic insecurity in a region. In 1997, half those in the labour force feared that they were likely or very likely to lose their job. In Volgo-Vyatka and the North-west regions, upwards of two-thirds were afraid of unemployment. Even where the fear was least, in Central Russia and the Urals, 44 per cent were anxious about keeping hold of their job.
